"If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is around, does it make a sound?"

I wanna see a good debate on this one. =3

1) set up a tape recorder and/or video camera
2) chop into a tree to where eventually gravity/animals will pull it down
3) leave area
4) ???

Yes.... God damn it, Aera ninja'd me.

As long as it hits the ground, it makes vibrations, which in turn create sounds.

I think the question should be "does it create NOISE". Noise is an unpleasant sound, so how to define a sound as unpleasant when there's nobody to judge it?

Depending on where in space, then yes... The planet Earth is floating through Space and therefore is part of Space. A bomb here deffinitely makes a sound =P theres always a smart ass way of answering anything.

From a philisophical perspective I have to say no...

Who is to say the tree even exists?
Can you PROVE it exists? Without being there or having a camera?
I believe it was John Locke who theorized that an object only exists if/when you or someone else is looking at it. Otherwise it is stored in memory, so when we look at it again it looks the same. In which case everything we see or do everyone else knows about, because if you make a drawing...and show it to someone they see what you drew, right? But... did you describe it to them? No. They saw what you showed. Which means that they would have already known...

ANYWAY thats my two cents...

And you cant answer that. Everything outside of our immediate environment is conceptual, people. And concepts are debateable.

The question should be more interesting.

If three squirrels are in a forest having sex, and no one is around, do they make a sound? I don't even know if they make a sound when someone is around. Tricky.
